About Heartland Surrogacy

Heartland Surrogacy is a full-service, for-profit surrogacy agency founded in 2013 and based in Des Moines, Iowa. It works with gestational surrogates and intended parents, providing case management that carries a match through the journey. The agency says it was Iowa's first surrogacy agency, and that it opened a satellite office in Portland, Oregon, in 2016.

The agency was co-founded by Brie Powers, who serves as president and whom the agency describes as a three-time gestational surrogate, and Monica Villa, co-founder and vice president. Both are listed as owners, with Villa named as the principal contact on the agency's Better Business Bureau file. Ownership has remained with the founders.

Heartland describes itself as a boutique agency that intentionally stays small so that staff can work closely with each surrogate and each set of intended parents. Its program covers the core steps of a gestational surrogacy arrangement, including screening and matching between surrogates and intended parents and coordination of the journey that follows. The agency works with LGBTQ+ intended parents, and it publishes its agency fee and surrogate compensation figures, which appear in the tables further down this page along with its eligibility requirements for surrogates.

The agency is listed in the Men Having Babies Surrogacy Advisor provider directory and in the Adult Congenital Heart Association's patient resource directory. It holds an A+ rating from the Better Business Bureau, where it is not an accredited business; details appear below.

Heartland changed our lives, and we’re forever grateful! We welcomed two beautiful boys thanks to their thoughtful, caring, and well-organized shepherding through two surrogacy journeys. Founded by, managed, and staffed with former surrogates and other wonderful women, this organization understands surrogacy intimately and was able to connect us with incredible surrogate carriers. We’ve referred friends to them and will continue to do so. This is a trustworthy and professional organization, providing an incredible service, and at very reasonable rates.

The surrogacy journey is one that’s complex and can be emotional. Having an agency that is responsive, is able to deliver, and can support you with managing the process is critical. Heartland found the best match we could have asked for in a quicker timeframe than they quoted and was the most cost effective option in all our research. We couldn’t have felt more lucky on how it all worked out.

Heartland surrogacy was a great organization to work with. I felt supported from day one as a surrogate. They made time to answer all of my questions and let me know that I was appreciated. I liked that they were local as well. Would recommend to anyone considering surrogacy.
